Types of Mastiff Dogs

Types of mastiff dogs greatly depend on the breed. Mastiff is a large breed of dog of the general mastiff or Molosser group which largely influenced by the origin of the breed and it originates from different countries around the world.

Following are the different breeds of a mastiff dog:

  • American Mastiff – a breed of dog in the molosser group.
  • Bullmastiff – it is defined to be a cross between the English mastiff and the bulldog.
  • English Mastiff - a breed of dog in molosser group.
  • Fila Brasileiro or Brazilian Mastiff – a breed of dog in the molosser group originating in Brazil. It is also a type of mastiff dog that is a cross between the English mastiff and the bloodhound.
  • Spanish Mastiff – an ancient breed of dog originating in Spain.
  • Neopolitan Mastiff – an ancient breed of dog originating in Italy.
  • Tibetan Mastiff – an ancient breed of dog originating in Tibet.
  • Dogue de Bordeaux or Bordeaux Mastiff or French Mastiff – is one of the most ancient French breeds.
  • Pug – a dog of the toy group that is considered by some to be a miniature breed of mastiff and it originated in China.
  • Cane Corso – it is a type of mastiff dog that which originated in Italy.
  • Japanese Mastiff – known as Tosa Inu, is a breed of Japanese fighting dogs.

Mastiff appearance is usually described as being a dog that is powerfully built, with a massive body, broad skull and a head that is generally square in appearance. The size is immense so, handling it must be balanced with proper security. The temperament of the mastiff breed is a combination of grandeur, dignity and courage. It is also calm and affectionate to its master and is capable of guarding properties like homes and farms.

It is a well-mannered house pet but needs sufficient room to stretch out.  Most types of mastiff dogs are very protective to its master and should be handled sensibly since it is exceptionally powerful and can be difficult to control. Since this is a large breed of dog it should have the correct diet and enough exercise. The expected lifespan for a mastiff dog is about 9 to 11 years.
